Handling Incomplete Grades

To extend a specific student's access to a course beyond the usual end date, you need to do the following (in no particular order):

Set the  course  end date further into the future to the last date the student may need access to the course (Course settings > Course details tab).
Edit the original  sections  (Course settings > Sections tab) and make sure the official end date is set and the checkbox is checked to limit student access to the start/end dates.
Create a new section with the same end date and enroll the student in it.

Right now only an admin can perform steps 2 and 3, so you’ll need to know the name and finish date of each student taking the incomplete.

Reason for steps:

Step 1  makes it possible to set new due dates/lock dates for the student finishing the incomplete. Otherwise, Canvas will say you can’t set an assignment due date/lock date beyond the course end date.

Step 2  keeps students from having access beyond the normal end date, because the section end date will override the course end date.

Step 3  prevents the student receiving the incomplete from having his/her access restricted at the same time as the other students.
