07-Banner Integration: Courses and Sections

Courses and sections

Banner and Canvas both organize classes and enrollments using  courses  and  sections . In both systems, a section exists within a course.

In Canvas
A  course   contains all of the  course content, user interactions,  and most  settings.
A  section   contains  user enrollment information.

When a student signs up for a class in Banner, he or she is enrolled in a Banner section. This triggers a live event that is sent to Canvas, and Canvas enrolls the student in the appropriate Canvas section. The section exists within a course, and the student has access to the content contained in that course.

A course can, and often does, contain more than one section (see the section on crosslisting below). In Canvas, a section can be moved from one course to another. When this happens, the students and teachers enrolled in that section lose access to the content and interactions in the first course and gain access to the content and interactions in the second course.

Content  in this case means Canvas pages, files, assignments, quizzes, discussion activities, and more.  Interactions  are submitted assignments, posted grades, comments on assignments, discussion posts, and the like. A student can only see interactions that are associated with them. Teachers can see interactions for everybody who is in the course.
